Revive Us Again

Religious historians in the U.S. often point to the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial as the high water mark for American fundamentalism. Publicly humiliated by Clarence Darrow`s rhetorical skewering of their standard bearer, William Jennings Bryan, fundamentalists began a long period of retreat into near-invisibility. In Revive Us Again, historian Joel Carpenter, provost of Calvin College, argues that the fundamentalists` retreat was only from public view; they went underground, where they established an extensive subculture of Bible schools christian college of missions and colleges, foreign mission societies, seminaries, camp meetings, christian college of missions and small publishing houses.
