Shay locomotive - The Shay locomotive was the most popular and best-known type of geared steam locomotive. They were built to the patents of Ephraim Shay, who can be fairly credited with the invention of the concept of a geared steam locomotive.

Steam turbine locomotive - A steam turbine locomotive is a steam locomotive which transmits steam power to the wheels via a steam turbine. Numerous attempts at this type of locomotive were made, mostly without success.

High pressure steam locomotive - A high pressure steam locomotive is a steam locomotive with a boiler that operates at pressures well above what would be considered normal.
